This coastal area is home to around 900 species, 12 of which are new to science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Discover the <strong>Algarve's top marine species<\/strong> to watch this summer!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dolphins in the Algarve<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Common Dolphin<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Common dolphins, <em>delphinus delphis<\/em>, are narrow, with a prominent beak and have a black colouration on their back and a yellow or light brown colouration from the flanks to halfway up their body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">This species of cetacean is one of the most observed in the Algarve, known for being <strong>very sociable<\/strong>, so it is possible to find groups with several Common Dolphins. And it has a particular tendency to approach and sail on the bow of boats!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bottlenose Dolphin<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/algarexperience.com\/en\/blog\/bottlenose-dolphin\/\" target=\"_self\">Bottlenose Dolphin<\/a>, <em>tursiops truncatus<\/em>, is fond of tropical waters and warm oceans, being one of the most observed species in the Algarve. These dolphins have a predominantly grey colouration, with a slightly darker back, but their best-known feature is their <strong>\"smiling\" beak<\/strong>. The bottlenose dolphin is highly intelligent and an active animal when socializing and <strong>can provide unforgettable scenes to observers!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The bottlenose dolphin is highly intelligent and an active animal when socializing and can <strong>provide unforgettable scenes to observers!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Harbour Porpoise<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The Harbour Porpoise is a small cetacean, found near the coast and very common in Portugal. Unlike the Common Dolphin and the Bottlenose Dolphin, they are <strong>shyer animals<\/strong>, so do not approach boats and are more difficult to observe. Normally they feed alone, near the seabed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Risso\u2019s Dolphin<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The Risso\u2019s Dolphin, during its life, acquires several scars, which never become the same colour again. This phenomenon makes the Risso\u2019s Dolphin <strong>present a special colouring<\/strong>, being that, as an adult, it becomes almost white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Sometimes, they are also sighted in our <a href=\"https:\/\/algarexperience.com\/en\/algarexperience-experiences\/dolphins\/\" target=\"_self\">dolphin watching experiences in the Algarve<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Orca<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although many people think that Orca is a whale, Orca is a dolphin, the largest dolphin that exists!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It normally forms groups of 2 to 10 animals, in a matriarchal association. And, just like the other dolphin species, they also communicate through sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the human being, the Orca is the mammal with the largest area of geographical distribution, being present in all oceans. These animals that pass the Algarve coast during spring and summer are part of the subpopulation of the Strait of Gibraltar, specialising in the hunting of bluefin tuna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>Whales in the Algarve<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Although we have dedicated <a href=\"https:\/\/algarexperience.com\/en\/experiences\/dolphins-and-benagil-caves-catamaran\/\" target=\"_self\">dolphin watching experiences on a catamaran<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/algarexperience.com\/en\/experiences\/dolphins-and-benagil-caves-rib-boat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rib boat<\/a>, we sometimes have encounters with other animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">In the 2021 season, we had <strong>seven encounters with two whale species in the Algarve<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Minke Whale<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The Minke Whale is one of the smallest baleen whales species, and can be seen <strong>all year round in the Algarve<\/strong> as our waters are temperate.
